AVATAR & DELGO

James Cameron's AVATAR trailer was released yesterday....
and many have pointed out it bares very similar resemblence
to last year's full-length animated feature DELGO:

Jim, I love your blog and your never ceasing humor...but I think you took this one a bit too far. It's stretching. Really stretching

well, i COULD be mistaken, but from what i remember, the plots, or the "theme" seems very similar.....

thanks, man!

re: the post...

I did not make these comparisons myself. I'm merely sharing with you what someone else noticed.

while some are stretching it more than others, I do think that's there's no doubt similar concepts and visuals between the two. Especially since Avatar is being sold as "something you've never seen before". Perhaps they mean the 3D experience...? Because the visual concepts are far from new and are not strictly tied to Delgo....

...Mech Warrior suits.... blue elves... "native american" warriors.... dinosaur creatures.... blah blah blah

back to point: look at those comparisons again... I don't think its REALLY stretching it that much.

Total similarities:

Floating chunks of "earth"

Riding flying dragon beasts

Felinesque warriors

Fairy/Ferngully imagery & colors

Also, I'm not bashing the film here... just sharing stuff that I found interesting.

hey, we're all commenting at the same time! Its like a chat room! ;)

I think that some of the ideas and visual concepts are prevailing within sci-fi culture. Floating islands, mech machines, an alien race that you fall in love with. I've seen these ideas pop-up in dozens of books/shows/movies i've given my attention to.

I'm actually surprised that the film hasn't been compared to Douglas Chiang's Robota or has been called "Dances with Wolves in space".

yeah, my biggest "complaint" is that I was hoping for something more original from Cameron. Its like a big mish-mash of sci-fantasy themes and visuals.

The proof is in the pudding, and it's almost pudding time.

If it's the experience, then fine, I'll go with that... better be a brand new kind of 3D.

There are a lot of similarities...
I see here, with "Delgo".

Maybe JC should make the Thundercats movie... 3D!!

James Cameron's Thundercats?
I'd see that! HO!

Cool blog, Jim!
I've been checking it multiple times everyday for about 6 months, since a friend introduced me to it. I'm slowly making my way through the archives, too! Keep up the smashin!

ah yes, JimPRAISE...

My sincerest apologies to all who have been waiting... my work load (day job) has been crazy since I first posted about it and I haven't had the time...

I have made my lists, I just need to acquire the appropriate images...

then my computer is acting bunk and won't play dvds - so I can't screen grab.

JimPRAISE is still coming, I promise!!!

of course, now its been built up so much it will surely only disappoint.....

I agree with Matthew. It's EASY to find similarities in most sci-fi media as well as fantasy media. I mean, what fantasy media can you NOT find similarities to LOTR?

Of course, it's a natural human tendency to compare things to each other and find similarities if only to make sense of the world. So I can see the similarities to Delgo.

I also REALLY like the comparison to Dances with Wolves.

They definitely mean the 3D experience (like the wearing glasses kind) when they say "you've never seen this before".

@spacejace
But Delgo was in 3D...

I wouldn't be surprised if it was inspired by it.

@ Blue Diablo
Both movies are CG but I didn't think Delgo was "wear glasses and stuff jumps out at you 3d".

I just watched the Delgo trailer. It looks more like a game trailer than Avatar. BOTH have very little fur/hair. It's just too hard to make believable I guess.

Avatar has been in the making since right after Titanic. Delgo looks more like Avatar

Untrue (I think).
After Titanic, James Cameron took a much needed break from film and delved into his other passion: deep sea diving & exploration. "Aliens of the Abyss" stemmed from that. Over 10 years after Titanic, he returned to film to begin working on Avatar (script and 3D viewing technology). The visual looks & concept art did not begin until a few years ago.
